The goal for this 2015-16 Barcelona collection

On Saturday, Barcelona again displayed that resolve when the club struggled and showed fatigue in a hard-fought 2-1 victory away to Las Palmas. Barcelona did not perform to its full capabilities, but Luis Enrique’s men returned home with three points yet again. With the victory, the Catalans extended their unbeaten streak to 32 matches across all competitions, with the last defeat coming way back on Oct. 3 away to Sevilla. Approaching five months unbeaten, this team is not due to collapse and give up its massive lead to a team that struggles to score consistently or to a team that is adjusting to a new manager.

Of course, Barcelona’s goals for the season stretch beyond repeating as the domestic league champion. The Catalans have already booked passage to the final of the Copa del Rey, where Sevilla awaits for a late May date. Sevilla beating Barcelona on neutral ground would be a surprise result, but it is still more likely than the club losing the league at this stage. With three months remaining in the season, Barcelona expects to sleepwalk to the domestic double.

The goal for this 2015-16 Barcelona collection, though, is to capture the double-treble. A year ago, Barcelona won La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the UEFA Champions League to claim the second European treble in the club’s history. No other club has repeated the feat. Barcelona captured its first European treble during the 2008-09 season under Pep Guardiola, with the eye-widening trio of Messi, Samuel Eto’o and Thierry Henry leading the front line.

The 2009-10 Barcelona repeated as domestic league champion, but the decision to sell Eto’o to Inter Milan in exchange for Zlatan Ibrahimovic would come back to haunt Barca, as the Italian club eliminated them in the Champions League semifinals en route to Inter Milan’s treble of 2009-10. Also, Barcelona failed to advance past the round of 16 in the Copa del Rey that season, so the current crop has seemingly already surpassed the collection most often compared to the current setup.
